The purpose of electrolytic refining of copper anode plates

        Release time:2025-11-07 13:45 Views:

In the copper processing and refining process, the copper electrolytic cell plays a crucial role. This step is exactly the same as the electrolytic refining of primary copper and is the final step in obtaining high-purity cathode copper.

        Copper electrolysis equipment

The main purpose of copper electrolytic cells is clear and important: to purify the copper in the anode plate to more than 99.99% through electrochemical means, while enriching and recovering precious metals and rare elements such as gold and silver, so as to maximize the utilization of resources.

The process, while not complex, is remarkably sophisticated. Anode plates from scrap copper are placed together with the starting electrode in an electrolytic cell containing a copper sulfate solution, and then direct current is applied. Under the influence of the current, the copper on the anode plates loses electrons, becoming copper ions that enter the solution. Meanwhile, the copper ions in the solution gain electrons at the cathode, depositing to form high-purity cathode copper. Simultaneously, precious metals and rare elements less reactive than copper in the anode plates, unable to participate in the electrochemical reaction, gradually deposit at the bottom of the electrolytic cell, forming anode sludge. This anode sludge, as a concentrate of precious metals and rare elements, can be further processed using hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical methods to achieve efficient separation and recovery of various precious metals and rare elements.

With its precise electrochemical control mechanism, the copper electrolytic cell not only improves copper purity but also achieves efficient enrichment of precious metals and rare elements, providing solid technical support for the green and sustainable development of the copper industry and the high-value utilization of resources.
